I’ve been excited by Bionic Commando since it was announced last year. With Bionic Commando ReArmed tickling the taste buds, I just knew that I had to get in on the action with this game.

The first opportunity to play it was on Wednesday, where we had a multiplayer session. It must have been beginner’s luck as I was winning most games on my first try of the game.

However, what I noticed about multiplayer was how simple and fun it was. Each character is different coloured, with various weapons laid out across the map. Each map had various surfaces and heights, to take full advantage of the Bionic Arm, and it was a lot of fun swinging everywhere and climbing up buildings in order to take out the enemy.

The game was seamless with very little issues where controls and general gameplay are concerned. The best thing about the swinging mechanic is that you have to aim and control where you want to press R2. It’s not scripted like in a SpiderMan game. To me, that takes the fun out of it.

Another fun use of the Bionic Arm is that you can grab enemies and perform a move known as “Death From Above” in order to deliver a devastating kick. In multiplayer, one hit is devastating with a second kick fatal. In single player, it’s pretty similar but all the more fun to use.
Combat is pretty self explanatory with generic third person shooting elements. In single player however, you can perform a “Kite” with cars in order to hold them in the air, before releasing them on your target, effectively killing them.

The environments themselves were bright, colourful and even dark with various times of day applied to the areas, especially in multiplayer. In single player, we went from a jungle to a city where we fought a huge boss known as the Mohole.

With the Mohole, you had to use the cars and throw them at it when it has its mouth open. You can also use the various weapons found in the car park to add more damage. The difficult thing about the Mohole is that it can go underground and appear from nowhere. Although you can keep track by watching the smoke trails, sometimes he’ll catch you out when you least expect it. As you progress through the battle, he’ll also use a more powerful move where he’ll fire out plasma waves which are hard to avoid. Jump once and you could be caught by the second wave. Thanks to Scott, I found that climbing up a tree helped to avoid the attacks altogether.

When you stun the Mohole, it will rise and then crash down on the earth. That’s your cue to use your Bionic Arm on his head, which will result in him throwing you in to the air. This is where you can deliver a powerful melee attack where holding down Triangle and Circle will result in Spencer pounding the Mohole’s head from above. Absolutely awesome, despite it not being a finisher move.

Overall, the Mohole is fun, challenging and even worse on Commando (hardest difficulty). But hey, I still succeeded. ;]

Bionic Commando looks like a solid game, and the game Spider-Man always wished it could be. This time, we have guns, giant robots and a dreadlocked hero aiming to kick some butt instead.

Bionic Commando is sure to be one of my favourite titles of the year, and it releases next month!
